Most helpful items for the home chef. Pssst!… You don’t have to be a chef! I cook a lot! I mean a lot! I really enjoy cooking for my family and trying new recipes, but cooking almost every day can be tedious. There are several inexpensive items in my kitchen that save me time and make my life much easier.

Magnetic Spice Containers
These magnetic spice containers are amazing! Keeping them next to the stove is convenient. I love the way they look and I keep them stocked with the seasonings and spices I use often, like cumin, paprika, cayenne, garlic powder, turmeric, and curry powder. Fill a few with poppy seeds, black sesame seeds, or whole nutmeg. I use these less frequently, but sometimes just take a whole nutmeg seed and give it a good sniff because it makes me happy!
True stainless steel is NOT magnetic. I learned this fact as I was moving into a new rental home and tried to put a magnetic photo of my dog on the fridge. Laughs from my friends burst through the air as the photo fell straight to the kitchen floor! If your fridge is stainless or filled with kid’s artwork, you can DIY a magnetic chalkboard anywhere with this clever Garlic Press with Built-In Cleaner” data-wplink-url-error=”true”>Garlic Press with Built-In Cleaner
This garlic press is outstanding because of its built-in cleaner. It works best when you don’t
peel the garlic (time-saver)! I hate having to dig out the leftover peel after each clove press and with this handy gadget, you don’t have to. I love the smell of garlic in my kitchen, not on my hands.
100% Worth It!
We always have fruit on the counter. Tossing fresh fruit in the fridge as soon as you get home from the market helps eradicate bugs. There are certain fruits that should be refrigerated, like grapes and berries. Bananas, however turn black when refrigerated; this is not enticing and my kids simply will not eat them.
Refrigerating fresh tomatoes will ruin their texture and flavor. Fresh basil will turn soggy and brown. Cold refrigerator temperatures will dry out juicy oranges.
If you’ve ever gotten a few fruit flies in your kitchen, you soon have hundreds! Female fruit flies begin breeding after a mere 2 days of adulthood and will lay approximately 400 eggs in their short life span. Fruit flies are harmless to your health, but the thought of eating fruit covered in larvae (also eating said fruit) is not exactly appetizing.
This may seem trivial, but if you have bags of chips and popcorn in the pantry and open bags of frozen fruit and peas in the freezer, wooden clothespins are the most economical and environmentally friendly option. Sometimes they break in two and you may not have the patience to put them back together, but you can get 50 pins for about 12¢ a piece. Not as cute as those animal character bag clips, but we all need to pinch a few pennies somewhere.
This pot is a most helpful item for many reasons. As no separate strainer is needed, it will save you from washing an extra dish (hallelujah)! It also includes large and small holes that even short pasta won’t fit through when draining.
Made from stainless steel, it’s not only better for your health, but cannot be damaged no matter the abuse you put it through. Dishwasher safe and works with gas, electric, and induction. It even has a silicone handle, so you won’t burn your hands when draining your pasta for mac and cheese! They’ve thought of everything!
My oldest son bought me a recipe box for Christmas and I use it almost every day! Despite having favorite recipes memorized, I’m afraid of leaving out or running out of a crucial item. I always reference my box for recipes I don’t make often, such as party appetizers and holiday fare. If I make something new and everyone loves it, it goes into my recipe box.
There are two added bonuses to this particular recipe box: Protective card covers are included, meaning recipes can be wiped clean of any slops and smudges from mussed up fingers. There’s a notch on top of the box that holds the card for easy viewing while cooking!
