Someone recently asked me about the 5 most popular supplements for weight loss
posted on apple.news. I will tackle three out of five of these supplements today, as all three contain Garcinia Extract, AKA hydroxycitric acid (HCA), Garcinia Cambogia, Garcinia indica, Garcinia atroviridis, Hibiscus subdariffa.
According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), “studies showed a very small, statistically significant difference in weight loss favoring HCA over placebo”, however “gastrointestinal adverse events were 2 times more common” in the group that took HCA.
The significance? A 1% weight loss in HCA users compared to the placebo group.
Pay attention to this:
Out of 5002 articles written about HCA and weight loss, the NCBI found only 12 to be potentially relevant articles.
All 12 studies that included acceptable clinical studies had flaws. For example, some studies reported significant differences that were not really significant according to reputable research guidelines. Some of these trials concealed the results backing their conclusions.
There were also some negative events associated with the HCA group, including headache, skin rash, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth and bad breath, fatigue, brain fog and an increased incidence of the common cold.
Trustworthy journals report that due to the short duration of studies involving the use of HCA, it is unclear how safe or dangerous this dietary weight-loss supplement is.
Anyone remember hydroxycut? This was a very popular weight loss supplement that contained HCA. Hydroxycut has been withdrawn from the market.
