Several months ago, I gave my husband a gift of a cedar garden box for the blazing, hot top deck off our bedroom. Â I grew up with garden vegetables year round, as my grandparents and Dad were both avid gardeners. Â Organic fruits and vegetables aren’t cheap and we both thought it would be great to have fresh produce straight from the back yard. Â We started with eggplant, Roma tomatoes and yellow crookneck squash. Â They did well and whet Mike’s appetite for something bigger. Â So, he constructed two raised beds in our back yard. Â He used cedar, as it is naturally rot-resistant and we wanted to avoid any chemicals leaching into the soil from treated wood.
I can’t take credit for the fruits of labor, as I have probably watered a total of three times and picked beans and tomatoes twice. Â Nonetheless, I have savored the results of Mike’s hard work! Â We have hopes for strawberries, brussels sprouts, butternut squash, pumpkins and more!! Â Everything hasn’t worked out, for example the swiss chard, but its been fun and a learning experience!
As I was making whole grain breakfast wraps this morning, my 2 year old was standing on a chair at the counter shoveling yellow tomatoes from the garden into his mouth. Â Mike made some tasty homemade hash browns from shredded potatoes, chopped onions and red Roma tomatoes from the garden.
Breakfast was delicious, but tomorrow’s breakfast may be a good ole’ bowl of Cheerios…
