Several months ago, I gave my husband a gift of a cedar garden box for the blazing, hot top deck off our bedroom. I grew up with garden vegetables year round, as my grandparents and Dad were both avid gardeners. Organic fruits and vegetables aren’t cheap and we both thought it would be great to have fresh produce straight from the back yard. We started with eggplant, Roma tomatoes and yellow crookneck squash. They did well and whet Mike’s appetite for something bigger. So, he constructed two raised beds in our back yard. He used cedar, as it is naturally rot-resistant and we wanted to avoid any chemicals leaching into the soil from treated wood.

I can’t take credit for the fruits of labor, as I have probably watered a total of three times and picked beans and tomatoes twice. Nonetheless, I have savored the results of Mike’s hard work! We have hopes for strawberries, brussels sprouts, butternut squash, pumpkins and more!! Everything hasn’t worked out, for example the swiss chard, but its been fun and a learning experience!
As I was making whole grain breakfast wraps this morning, my 2 year old was standing on a chair at the counter shoveling yellow tomatoes from the garden into his mouth. Mike made some tasty homemade hash browns from shredded potatoes, chopped onions and red Roma tomatoes from the garden.
Breakfast was delicious, but tomorrow’s breakfast may be a good ole’ bowl of Cheerios…
